Susan Thurow Metcalf, 73, of Sycamore, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on March 21, 2025. She was born on November 28, 1951, to Harlow and Barbara Thurow of Hinckley, IL.

Susan graduated from Hinckley-Big Rock High School in 1969 and spent 13 years as a hairstylist at Peterson’s Beauty Shop in Waterman, IL. She later worked at Jewel in the DeKalb and St. Charles locations for 15 years. Additionally, she provided in-home respite care for elderly families for over a decade. 

A longtime member of the First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Susan was married to Gary Metcalf for 15 years, and together they had two children, Darrick (Lisa) Metcalf and Dawn (Russ) Bercier. She spent the last seven years of her life with her beloved partner, Joe Baird. They enjoyed day trips to Lake Geneva and Lake Shabbona, as well as vacations to Florida. Susan also cherished spending time with Joe sitting on her porch and quiet nights watching QVC and the Food Network.

Above all, Susan loved spending time with her grandchildren—Donovan, Jackson, Riley, and Charlie. She delighted in attending their baseball and softball games, playing mini-golf, and making trips to the Dairy Ripple. Her grandchildren especially adored her famous cinnamon and sugar pancake roll-ups.

Susan is survived by her loving partner, Joe Baird of Sycamore; her son, Darrick (Lisa) Metcalf; her daughter, Dawn (Russ) Bercier; her brothers, Dale (Donna) Thurow of California and Keith Thurow of Nashville; her sister, Ann (Brian) Scofield; and her four cherished grandchildren, Donovan Lopez, Jackson Metcalf Lopez, Riley Bercier, and Charlie Bercier.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harlow and Barbara Thurow, and her grandparents, Emmett and Albertine Thurow of Hinckley and Arthur and Laura Thorson of Aurora.

A visitation will be held on March 27, 2025, from 12pm until time of funeral service at 2pm at First Lutheran Church, 324 N Third St, DeKalb, IL 60115, Interment will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery.
