SUSAN GAIL HAMMOND Obituary

Susan Gail Hammond, 70, of DeKalb, Illinois passed away on June 5, 2026, following a brave battle with cancer. Born Susan Gail Prater on October 18, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, she is the daughter of the late Buford and Oma Prater.
Susan graduated from Glenbard East High School in Lombard, IL. She married shortly after and had two beautiful daughters. Susan loved her life and her heart was full being a doting nanny to her grandchildren. Family was her love and her life. She enjoyed gardening, shopping and baking. Her grandchildren loved her baking so much they nicknamed her “Nana Banana”. Susan was smart as a whip and had a wickedly funny sense of humor. Her keen interest in true crime made her our honorary family detective. No one could get anything past her!  Susan’s knowledge of history and current events was truly amazing. You could ask her almost anything and get an answer. She was so proud to be an American and the freedom she was afforded to live her life, her way, and she lived it with a strong will and a godly faith.
Susan was preceded in death by her sister Deborah Lynn Klein.
She is survived by her daughters; Denise Lombardo and Tiffany Hammond; her grandchildren, Joshua Lombardo, Elijah Lombardo, Dempsey French and Slater French; her sisters, Lisa Ann Covert (John), Cheryl Efird (Henry); her brothers, Michael Prater (Charlotte), David Prater, Jeffrey Prater, Gregory Prater (Cathy)and Mark Prater; Aunt Madeline (Mike) and Uncle Ray; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held on June 10, 2026, at Elm Lawn Memorial Park located in Elmhurst.
Lord God, we thank You for the life of our loved one. Thank you for the moments we shared, the love we experienced, and the memories that remain in our hearts. Though we feel the pain of loss, we choose to be grateful. We bless You for her life and the impact she had on us. Receive her into Your eternal presence and grant her peace. Help us to remember her with love and not sorrow. Thank You, Lord, for this gift of her life. Amen.  Goodbye for now dear mother, nanny, sister, niece, aunt and friend. Until we meet again. Love you always!
