SANDRA ANN UNDERWOOD

Sandra Ann Underwood (Sandy), 72, died March 14, 2023, due to complications of early onset Dementia. Sandy spent most of the last 10 years of her life battling dementia.

She was born July 10, 1950, in Sycamore, Illinois, the daughter of Miles and Marjorie Underwood. Sandy grew up in Sycamore and attended Sycamore schools.

Sandy was a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and was a teaching professional.  She taught golf at Don Law Golf Academy, Ocean Breeze Golf and Country Club, Osprey Point Golf and Country Club, Cypress Creek Country Club, all in Florida, and Pine Meadow Golf in Mundelein IL.  The Golf for Women Magazine rated her one of the top 50 golf instructors (male and female) in the USA and one of the 10 top golf instructors in the State of Illinois.  She loved giving golf lessons and her clientele ranged from age 6 to 85.  Whether teaching male or female students it did not matter to Sandy.  Her life was dedicated to spreading the love of the game to as many people as possible. Sandy had a serious car accident in 2016 which almost took her life.  But the next day after surgery she was in the hospital bed giving golf tips to her surgeon and even offered him free golf lessons. Golf was Sandy’s Life!  Sandy started the Midge Underwood Memorial golf outing to raise money for DeKalb County Hospice.  This outing took place for 13 years and raised over $200,000 for Hospice. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Miles and Midge Underwood; her brother, William “Bill” Burke

She is Survived by her son, Frank (Natalie) Mullen; brother, Mike (Leslie) Underwood; sister, Mary (Dan) Curran; sister-in-law, Jan Burke, and many nieces and nephews.

No services are scheduled at this time. A private burial service will be celebrated at a later date.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Arden Courts ProMedica Memory Care Community in Geneva, Illinois for their four years of loving and compassionate care. We would also like to thank ProMedica Hospice-Heartland Hospice for two years of service and comfort given to Sandy.
