Ralph L. Benbow, 81, of Vancouver, WA, died Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center. He struggled with Alzheimer’s for several years.
He was born April 8, 1942, in Watertown, South Dakota the son of Harold and Helen (Warren) Benbow. Ralph married Mary Zeisser on June 29, 1968, in Warren, Ohio.
Ralph earned his B.S. and M.S. at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology; and his PhD of Physics from Iowa State University. Ralph was formerly employed by Northern Illinois University as a Physics Professor. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb, IL, where he sang in the church choir and served as an elder. He also sang in the DeKalb Festival Chorus, and enjoyed working out. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by two daughters, Lori (Kevin) Koeb of Vancouver, WA, and Sarah Hoffman of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren, Julia, Van, and Mckenna Koeb of Vancouver, WA, and Tyler, Ivy, and Mia Hoffman of Pittsburgh PA; also several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Benbow; three brothers, John, Bill, and Philip Benbow; and one sister Katherine Osander.
The Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday March 23, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road, DeKalb, IL 60115 with the Rev. Marty Marks, officiating. Burial of cremated remains will follow with Military Honors at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday in the church.
