Peter Karl Heinz Glanzmann died peacefully December 20, 2023, attended by his loving wife Sandy and cherished nephew Andrew Paetzold at Kishwaukee Hospital. Peter was born October 7, 1942 in Berlin, Germany to Eduard and Pauline “Mary” Glanzmann. He had two older sisters, Trudy and Anna Maria, who welcomed him into a war-torn country. He remembered hearing the bombs dropped by the Allies, and he knew hunger. After the war his family survived the deprivation that ensued, except for Anna Maria who died at a young age.
The family emigrated to the USA around 1953, settling near extended family in Des Plaines, IL. That’s where Peter learned a new language, acquiring skills passed along by his father who was quite handy.
After graduating from Maine Township High School, Peter worked a succession of jobs including custodial, and printing. Eventually, he bought properties which he maintained and rented to others.
He met the love of his life, Sandy, at the YMCA in DeKalb in 1989. They enjoyed a whirlwind romance and married on August 26, 1989. Together they worked and traveled, creating many fond memories. Peter, when he wasn’t working long hours, liked to watch professional wrestling. He stayed fit and healthy as well, exercising and lifting weights regularly. He even competed in triathlons.
Peter was baptized July 12, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb by Reverend Todd Peterson. He cleaned the church building for 22 years before retiring.
Peter collected swords, took pride in landscaping, and loved polka music.
He is survived by his wife Sandy, nephews Victor Schunemann and Andrew Paetzold, nieces Heidi (Schunemann) Langston and Heidi (Paetzold) DeGraf, as well as several grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Visitation for Peter will be at 1 pm, December 27, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 303 S 7th St, DeKalb, IL. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm, then a processional to Ohio Grove Cemetery in Sycamore, IL.
