Paul married Shirley Ann Hackman in 1955 in Rochelle. Together, they farmed and raised eight children. He was the fourth generation to farm the Herrmann land his father and his grandfather had farmed before him. He had a passion for history, especially family history. He hosted many family members on the farm and shared countless stories, which will be passed down to future generations.
He attended St. Bede Academy and graduated from Shabbona High School. He was a proud member of several championship athletic teams and was inducted into the Indian Creek Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He spent many hours coaching, teaching, or watching his children and grandchildren play baseball, softball, soccer and basketball. In addition to a love of sports, he enjoyed playing cards, drinking coffee with friends at the local coffee shop, and traveling to Rip’s Tavern for fried chicken and fishing. He traveled to Canada to fish with his friends and/or his sons almost every year for many years of his life.
Paul was president of the Scarboro Elevator Company for many years. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Waterman American Legion Post 65. He attended the St. James Catholic Church in Lee, IL.
He is survived by six children; Curt Herrmann of Shabbona, Michael (Susan) Herrmann of Sycamore, Catherine Herrmann of Peoria, Patrick Herrmann of DeKalb, Nancy (Dan) Snook of Bloomington, and David (Stephanie) Herrmann of Steward. He is also survived by a sister, Joyce Clinton, Imperial Beach, CA; Bill Herrmann, Ankeny, IA; Irvin (Cork) Herrmann, Jr., Centerville, OH; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley, and two sons, Joseph (Sam) Herrmann and Walter (Denise) Herrmann and several siblings.
We will celebrate his life and mourn his passing with a visitation on June 6, 2023, from 9:30 am until time of memorial mass at 11 am. The visitation and mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 231 W Kirke Gate, Lee, IL 60530 with Father Okoro officiating.
