DeKalb, IL and Sarasota, FL
Ona Lynn Johnson, age 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 22, 1949, to Wayne “Tommy” and Mary Jane (Leifheit) Tompkins in Waterman, IL.
Ona’s life was defined by her unwavering devotion to her family, friends, and the things she loved, especially the beach. She dedicated her early years to raising her two children, Gregg and Jayme, while building a rewarding and meaningful career with the DeKalb School District 428 Administration. Her final role with the district was as the Assistant to the Superintendent, where she worked tirelessly for many years.
Ona’s passion for community extended beyond her professional life. She spent much of her time nurturing lifelong friendships and creating lasting memories with those around her. After retirement, Ona found joy in escaping the cold northern winters by spending time in Sarasota, Florida. There, she rekindled her love for the beach, often turning her beachcombing adventures into a cherished pastime.
A proud mother and devoted grandmother, Ona, found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She was especially close to her sisters, and they enjoyed countless trips together, always ready for the next adventure.
Ona is survived by her children, Gregg (Jenny) Johnson of Lake Geneva, WI, and Jayme (Brian) Miller of Tinley Park, IL; her grandchildren Russel, Kalvin, Andrew, and Lauren; and her bonus grandchildren Noah, Jessie, Lana, and Lea. She is also survived by her dear sisters Amy (Butch) Overby and Jody (Frank) Guihan, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Ona was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Mary Jane Tompkins; her sister, Patricia Thurlby; and her brother, Kurt Wayne Tompkins.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, IL, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1:00 PM. Private interment will follow at a later date.
Ona’s love, kindness, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Children Lure’s Hospital in Ona’s name, that would have meant so much to her.
