MARGARET CARLTON Obituary
Margaret C. Carlton, 88, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024 in DeKalb, IL.
She was born and raised in Vermont, and graduated valedictorian of her high school class.
She moved to Los Angeles in her late teens, and worked at a local bank. While living in Southern California, she met and married her late husband, Burley, and together they had four daughters. The family relocated to DeKalb, Illinois in 1970. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at Northern Illinois University, where she worked in the Accounting Department. She was later an optician at DeKalb Optometric Associates.
Margaret resided in Elburn for many years with her late husband, Howard, and together they enjoyed the arts, music, films, travel, trips to Chicago, and many quiet sunsets.
Classical music and playing the piano were lifelong interests, including taking additional lessons into her early eighties. Passionate about history and education, she was also an avid reader who was rarely seen without a book at hand. She loved travel, including her pilgrimages to Israel and to her ancestral homeland of Ireland.
She always took an interest in the lives of others, and didn’t hesitate to encourage them to pursue their aspirations. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren, who brought so much joy to her life.
Margaret’s family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center for their excellent and heartfelt care.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 10:30 am, St. Mary Church, 329 Pine Street, DeKalb.
Private interment will be held after the service.
