Joan Benson, 62, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025. Born on October 12, 1962, in Shabbona, to Harley and Lou Ann (Whyte) Benson, she was a source of joy to all who knew her.
Joan faced the challenges of Down's syndrome with resilience and a bright spirit, bringing love and laughter to those around her. She graduated from Shabbona High School in 1982 and completed the McJobs program at McDonald’s University. Joan worked at McDonald's for 10 years, then served Northern Illinois University for 25 years before retiring.
She cherished time with family, especially as an aunt, and enjoyed bowling, bingo, traveling with her sister Jean, doing word searches, and collecting trolls. Her warm heart will be missed by all.
Joan’s quality of life was greatly enhanced by her sister Jean, who lovingly cared for her throughout her adult life.
She is survived by sisters Jean Benson and Barb (Paul) Salvatore, niece Kristen (Jim) Sauerbrei, nephew David (Lauren) Salvatore, five great-nieces and nephews, maternal aunt Carol Hajic, and numerous cousins.
