JAMES BARNETT Obituary

James Wesley Barnett, 62, of Rockford, IL, died on Sept. 10, 2024, at home of natural causes.

Jim, or Barney, as he was known to his friends, was born in DeKalb, IL, on January 12, 1962, to George and Sandra Barnett.

Jim grew up in DeKalb and Cortland, leaving DeKalb High School in 1980 to join the Army reserves. After receiving an honorable discharge, he got his GED and broker's license and had a brief career in insurance in northern Illinois. After an accident left him disabled, Jim didn't let his disability define him.  He moved to Montana and lived successfully on his own with Love (a huge Saint Bernard he rescued from an abusive situation) for many years. He moved back to the area several years ago to be closer to family. He enjoyed playing chess and cribbage, visits to the library and feeding the local wildlife.

He will be remembered for his childhood antics, love of animals, and charming personality.

He was preceded in death by his dad, George; and his beloved canine companion, Love.

He is survived by his mom, Sandy; sister, Lori (John) Bloxom; niece, Spencer Killian; Aunt, Sharon Scott; and cousins, Nick and Brian Scott.

Services will be private.
