Hwacha Thomas, 79, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

She was born January 14, 1945 in Seoul, South Korea, the daughter of Hyun Seung and Soon Bin (Park) Shin. Hwacha married Corwin Thomas on July 25, 1967, in Seoul, South Korea.

Hwacha was employed with Ace Coffee Bar, Inc. at Barber Greene Company. She was a member of Christ the Teacher University Parish. Hwacha was a devoted Christian whose unwavering faith guided her through life’s trials and triumphs. Known for her loving personality and straight-shooter attitude, she touched the lives of many people. Hwacha dedicated herself to fostering love and unity in her family. 

She is survived by her husband Corwin; her children Sean Bret Thomas of DeKalb and Jennifer (Jason) Juvingo of Fayetteville, GA; her grandchildren Ethan Thomas, Jack and Jamisen Juvingo; her brothers Hochul (YoungSook) Shin and Inchul (Yonhee) Shin; her sisters Micha Lee,  Keumcha (Jung) Yun and Junghee Shin Dulaney; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her granddaughter Isabel Thomas.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2024, at The Newman Center, 512 Normal Road, DeKalb, with Fr. William Etheredge officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in DeKalb. 
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2024, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.
