Harvey J. “Harve” Slade, 79, of DeKalb, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

He was born February 29, 1944, in DeKalb, the son of Henry and Mary (Potter) Slade.

Harve graduated from DeKalb High School in 1962.  He also attended Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University.

Harvey married Vivian Pennel at the First Congregational Church in DeKalb on July 31, 1993.  They celebrated their 30th anniversary this year.

Harvey worked for Northern Illinois University in materials management for over 45 years.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in DeKalb.

Harvey enjoyed crossword puzzles, and spending time outdoors, especially fishing and golfing. He was a handy man to have around.  He was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bears. He was a regular at morning coffee at The Junction.  Most of all he loved travelling in his motor home from coast to coast.  He drove every mile of the Alaskan Highway with Vivian.

He is survived by his wife Vivian;  his son William (Teresa) Slade of Ashton;  his daughter Cindy Slade of California;  five grandchildren;  four step-sons Charlie (Suzy) Pennel of Cambridge, MA, David (Sherri) Pennel of Elmhurst, Paul (Janet) Pennel of West Dundee, and Ralph (Samantha) Pennel of Endicott, NY; his step-daughter Mary (Jim Gormley) Pennel of Monona, WI;  six step-grandchildren; his brother Kenneth (Jodi Willrett) Slade of Malta; and his sister Melinda Slade of Mentor, OH.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers Richard and Gary Slade.

Harve was a cancer survivor, having fought leukemia for 27 years.  His family would like to thank Dr. Bayer and the Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Hospital for their loving care.

The Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM Monday, December 11, 2023, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer officiating.  Burial will follow at Afton Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
