GREGORY JOHN JOHNSON Obituary

Gregory John Johnson, 61, of Cortland, Illinois, found eternal peace on October 28, 2024, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and unwavering generosity that touched the lives of many.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Bruce John Johnson and Brenda Ruth (Hatleback) Johnson, Greg's calm presence and infectious chuckle became his trademark. He found his perfect match in Janelle, whom he married on March 13, 1998, in Naperville, Illinois, beginning a partnership filled with love, adventure, and shared dreams.

On September 10, 2010, Greg and Janelle’s hearts grew with the arrival of their son, Luke. Greg cherished every moment as a father, making it a priority to be at every baseball game, choir concert, round of golf, and any event that offered a chance to cheer Luke on. Whether on the sidelines or quietly encouraging from the stands, Greg was Luke’s biggest fan, and Luke was Greg’s pride and joy—unmistakable to anyone who saw them together.

A proud Green Bay Packers fan, Greg could often be found on game days cheering on his beloved team, surrounded by family and friends who came as much for his storytelling and jokes as for the football.

The family cabin in Rhinelander, Wisconsin – lovingly referred to as "the lake" – was Greg's slice of heaven on earth. There, he was in his element, spending sunny afternoons piloting the family boat across the water, the wind in his face and joy in his heart as his nieces and nephews hung on for dear life on tubes behind him, bouncing like ping pong balls across the boat's wake. At home, he was never happier than when wielding a power tool necessary for his latest project or sharing quiet moments with his pets, who found in him the gentlest of souls.

A member of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, Illinois, Greg lived his faith through actions, always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or offer comfort to those in need. His generosity knew no bounds, and his easy manner made him a world-class confidant and friend.

Greg is survived by his wife Janelle and son Luke; mother Brenda Johnson; brothers Steve (Sheila) and Randy (Shawna) Johnson; sisters Molly Johnson and Kathy (Keith) Dmochowski; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He joins in eternal rest his father Bruce Johnson; uncles Dick Verage, Bob Johnson, and Rich Hattleback; aunt Sue Verage; cousin Scott Verage; and grandparents Chet & Maleda Hatleback, and Jack & Lois Johnson.

A celebration of Greg's life will be held at Salem Lutheran Church, 1145 DeKalb Ave, Sycamore, Illinois, on November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM, officiated by Pastor Preston Fields. Visitation will precede the service from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at the church.

In Greg's memory, please share a joke with a loved one, cheer on the Packers, or simply spend a moment appreciating the beauty of a lake on a sunny day – he would have wanted nothing more.
