George Rumpf Jr., 87, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024, at Tower Hill Healthcare in South Elgin.
He was born January 8, 1937, in Dixon, Illinois, the youngest of two sons of George C. and Esther (Finnestand) Rumpf Sr.
George graduated from Malta High School class of 1955. After high school he attended Bradley University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in general business in 1959. He married his high school sweetheart, Marion Donnell on June 28, 1958 in DeKalb, Illinois. With deep love and affection, George and Marion celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 28, 2024.
Shortly after his college graduation, George was drafted into the US Army and served two plus years as a chaplains assistant. During his military time Marion remained in the DeKalb area working as a secretary to the superintendent of Malta schools. After his military tour from 1960-1962 George returned to the Malta area and started a career with the Del Monte Corporation in Rochelle, Illinois, in the human resource department. He served several management positions in Rochelle, Tampa, Florida and Ogden, Utah. In 1990 Georges business group was purchased by Proctor & Gamble, another move through their management ranks. Ending his career as operations manager of Hawaiian Punch and Sunny Delight in 2004.
After retirement George and Marion spent four years in Tucson, Arizona. During this time Marion was recovering from colon/liver cancer and spent much time under care of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2008 they returned to Illinois, their childhood home, residing in Sycamore. George was a member of many community church and professional boards including the Malta School Board, church boards, San Francisco Safety Council and Chamber of Commerce.
George and Marion loved to travel. They visited all fifty states as well as many different countries including Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. He loved most sports and was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed driving a special needs bus for First Student for the DeKalb school district.
He is survived by his wife Marion; his brother Ronald Rumpf of Peoria, Illinois; and his niece Jane Genz; his nephews Brian Rumpf and Brent Rumpf; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Grace Free Lutheran Church, 1121 South 1st Street, DeKalb, with Rev. Michael Hodge officiating. Burial will follow at Malta Cemetery in Malta, with Full Military Honors.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at 12:00 p.m. at the church.
