It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved aunt, Godmother, daughter, friend- Gaye Lavonne Hicks, age 85. She passed away Monday, January 16, 2023 at Aperion Care in DeKalb, IL, after a brief struggle with lung cancer.
Gaye was born on January 22, 1937, to H. Lodore and Irene (Griswold) Tanner. She graduated from Malta High School, Class of 1955. She married Ralph Hicks in 1960 and they traveled extensively when he was in the Air Force, until their divorce many years later. She worked at Kishwaukee Medical Associates for over 15 years, retiring in 2000.Gaye served her communities well, including roles as an Air Force volunteer, Family Services volunteer and Malta Trustee.
Gaye was a member of the Malta Congregational Church until it closed its doors. She loved to bake, read and watch Fox News. Her greatest joys in retirement included spending time at the Malta Senior Center and enjoying visits from her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gaye is survived by her nieces Amy (Tom) Ruschell, Anita (Wally) Bottom and Abby Tanner; her nephews Craig (Mary) DeWeerdt and Daniel Tanner; great-nieces Audrey (Ryan) Olscheske, Rachel (Kevin) McCarthy, Taylor Ruschell, Ashley Bottom, Tara Ruschell and Miranda Bottom; and great-nephew Tanner Ruschell, as well as several great-great nieces and nephews.
Gaye was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Patricia DeWeerdt, her brother Barrie Tanner and her great-nephew Connor Bottom.
Friends may call on Friday, January 20th from 9:30am to 11am at the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. A private (family) funeral and burial to follow immediately, officiated by Pastor Jeremiah Thompson.
