Elmie Carey, 97, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Monday, August 5, 2024, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

She was born June 14, 1927 in DeKalb, Illinois, the daughter of Herman and Hilma (Korpela) Maki. Elmie married David Carey on November 9, 1946 in DeKalb, Illinois.

Elmie was a graduate of DeKalb High School. She was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in DeKalb.  Her family was her pride and joy.  She loved to prepare delicious family favorites with everyone gathered around her dining room table.  Her favorite place to be was in the kitchen baking up cookies, cakes, and a family favorite, finnish coffee bread.

Her grand kids enjoyed many sleepovers and grandmas famous scrambled eggs.

She is survived by her children Jeanne (Bruce) Densborn, Sandy (Ted) Woodin and Tom (Sandy) Carey; her grandchildren Richard Newtson, Lori Grubbs, Shannon Potter, Shane Carey, Chris Densborn, Sara Dumdie and Matt Dumdie; her great-grandchildren Meagan, Paige, Jared, Conor, David and Michael; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband David in 2006; her daughter Linda in 1979; her sisters Martha Flavin, Ingrid Hakala and Eva Nelson; her brothers Neilo and Henry Maki.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1915 North 1st Street, DeKalb, with Rev. Bob Hansen officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be at a later date at Fairview Park Cemetery, in DeKalb. 

Visitation will be from 10 :00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
