BETTY ROBERTS Obituary

Betty Jeanne Roberts, 95,  Born in Granite City Illinois on October 3, 1927, the daughter of Ruby Jackson (Moore) and Harold Sortor, Betty began a lifetime of adventures.

Most of her youth was spent growing up in her beloved Texas. Betty graduated early from high school and earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing from St. Louis Baptist Memorial Hospital. Betty served with the Army Nurse Corp.

After college she met William Roberts in St. Louis, and they married on May 14, 1949 in Gary Indiana. Betty and Bill would go on to spend 68 years creating a life full of love. Together, they raised their daughter Kathleen in Westchester Illinois. Betty held many roles- charge surgical nurse, school nurse, small business owner, yogi, philanthropist, foodie, gracious host, avid reader, animal lover, wife and mother. Betty navigated through motherhood and her drive to help others gracefully, driven by her unwavering faith in God. Throughout Betty and Bill’s marriage they would travel the country, fishing, golfing, and exploring. They became snowbirds after retirement and returned to Betty’s home state of Texas, where they could bask in the sun and enjoy the company of their many friends. After some time, Betty and Bill returned to Illinois to be close to their daughter and family.

There is no way to sum up 95 years in a couple of paragraphs. Betty’s smile, laughter, and gentleness warmed the hearts of so many over the years. Betty passed away March 14, 2023 surrounded by family at home. She lived a beautiful life and is now reunited with the love of her life, her Bill.

While her grandchildren were growing up she would always say “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck. I love you more.” Now as we say goodbye, Nanny, we love you more.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Ruby Jackson and Harold Sortor, and her husband William.

She is survived by her daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Terrence Ross. Her two grandchildren Meghan Marshall and Terrence Ross Jr, and her great grandchildren Sadie(Samuel) Salazar, Keelin Marshall, and Kevyn Marshall.
