Baldomero “Elmer” Velez, 95, a lifelong resident of Cortland, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Sunday, September 22, 2024, at his home.
He was born February 27, 1929, in New Braunfels, TX, the son of Miguel and Anita (Lopez) Velez. Baldomero married Jacqueline B. Garcia on October 27, 1956, at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb.
Elmer worked on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 37 years. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family at the Old Farts Club, and the YMCA. He also enjoyed spending morning times at McDonalds enjoying coffee with friends. In his last years with Union Pacific, he operated the Low Boy tractor trailer which he truly enjoyed.
He is survived by his children, Migel "Mike" (Vicki) Velez of Cortland, Andres "Andy" (Deborah) Velez of DeKalb, Elida "Lydia" (Kenneth) Greenawalt of Sycamore; grandchildren Clint (Jennifer) Humes, Ashley Henderson, Nycol (Keith) Hearn, Tori Velez and Malori Velez; great-grandchildren, Silas Henderson, and Olivia and Aleya Velez, Vada Devers, Ariyah Velez, and Grayson Velez; his siblings Margarito, Graciella, and Bernadina; also many nieces and nephews and special friend Catalina Esparza.
He was preceded in death by the mother of his children Jacqueline B. Velez; his parents and siblings.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, October 4, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sycamore. Burial will follow at Mound Rest Cemetery in Cortland.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 3, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.
