ALBERTA MAXINNE BERKES

Alberta Maxinne Berkes, 92, of DeKalb, Illinois, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.                              

She was born October 27, 1930 in DeKalb, Illinois, the daughter of Albert Walter and Grace Myra (Mahaffey) Leonhard. Alberta married Jerome Peter Berkes on October 12, 1956 at St Mary’s Church in DeKalb.                                                                                                                                                            Alberta was a lifelong resident of DeKalb, Illinois. She was a graduate of DeKalb Township High School class of 1948. She graduated from Swedish American School of Nursing in 1952. Alberta was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Chancel Choir, Celebration Chorale, and the DeKalb Sycamore Auto Club. She was very crafty and artistic, she enjoyed sewing and crochet.

She is survived by her sons, John (Donna) Berkes and Sam (Kathy) Berkes; grandchildren, John (Heather) Shew, Nathan Shew, Elizabeth (Tanner) McMaster, Michelle Berkes (Tyler Southern), Matthew Berkes, Bridget Tewksbury and Amanda Berkes; great-grandchildren, Rowan, Charlie and Ethan Shew, Caroline McMaster, Cayden, Chloe and Calli Tewksbury and one on the way; son-in-law, Ed Shew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerome; daughters, Eileen M. Berkes and Carol Shew; grandson, Jeffery Shew; great-grandson, Caleb Tewksbury.

The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2023, at First United Methodist Church, 321 Oak Street, DeKalb, with Rev. Jonathan Crail officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2023, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.
